Most of us have at least one email address. This mail address must be associated with an email client in order to send and receive messages. If we are talking about Microsoft Outlook, attaching files to a message may sometime produce winmail.dat files instead of the actual attached files. Winmail.dat files are in fact TNEF attachments (transport neutral encapsulation format) sent by the Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express or Microsoft Exchange applications. Users from other e-mail clients (like Thunderbird or Lotus Notes) cannot read them, neither their attachment, as the attachment and winmail.dat file may be combined into a single winmail.dat. Thus, it's important to have a software that can handle this type of file. One such program is Winmail Opener. As the name clearly states, this software can easily open any winmaill.dat file, displaying all its contents and allowing the user to extract the actual attached files.

Winmail Openener has a point and click installation process and supports any Windows version, from XP to Windows 7. It takes up 4 MB of hard disk space and it's gentle with the hardware resources.

Speaking about the interface of Winmail Opener, there is not much to say. It doesn't support any themes or skins but it's practical and easy to use. The user just needs to open the desired winmail. dat file, select all or some of the files attached and save them on the hard disk. That's it. The software can be automatically associated with .dat files for viewing their contents just by double-clicking on them.

Pros

It can open and display the contents of any winmail.dat file. Besides that, it allows the user to extract all or some of the files included in the .dat file. Furthermore, the program can be associated with .dat files, for viewing their contents just by double-clicking on them.

Cons

The interface seems a bit too simple and doesn't support any themes or skins. Winmail Opener is the perfect utility for opening any winmail.dat file and displaying its contents.
